National journalism leader and veteran editor Bill Kovach has been awarded the 2010 W.M. Kiplinger Award for Distinguished Contributions to Journalism from the National Press Foundation.
“Perhaps no one in his time has more epitomized the values of our profession—the sense that journalism must be tough but fair, uncompromising but humane, and above all searching, always asking more questions—than Bill Kovach,” the NPF judges said.
The award will be presented at the 27th annual National Press Foundation Awards Dinner, Tuesday night, February 16th, 2010, at the Washington Hilton Hotel. The theme of the night’s dinner is, “Journalism Matters.”
Bill Kovach has been a journalist and writer for 50 years. He was chief of the New York Times Washington Bureau, served as executive editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and curator of the Nieman Fellowships at Harvard University. He is the founding chairman of the Committee of Concerned Journalists, a group devoted to conveying the theories of good journalism practice to U.S. and international journalists. As a reporter, he was a tough and fearless newsman in the American South during the days of the Civil Rights movement. He served two years as Ombudsman for Brill’s Content magazine.
Kovach is also the co-author of The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the Public Should Expect (Crown 2001), which has been translated into 38 languages, as well as set in Braille type. The book, written with Tom Rosenstiel, was awarded Harvard University’s Goldsmith Book Prize (2002), the Sigma Delta Chi award for research in journalism and the Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism. Kovach and Rosenstiel also co-authored Warp Speed: America in the Age of Mixed Media (Century Press in 1999.
He has been widely honored within the journalism profession, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He serves on a number of boards including the board of directors of the Center for Public Integrity, and the advisory board of the Consortium of Investigative Reporters; the board of incorporators and the advisory board of Harvard Magazine; the advisory board of the I.F. Stone Awards; the advisory board of the Native American Journalists Foundation, The Right Question Project and the Encyclopedia of the Appalachians.

for Kovach were Austin H. Kiplinger, publisher of Kiplinger Washington Editors;
Sandy Johnson, executive editor for state news, AARP; John Harris,
editor-in-chief, The Politico; Susan Swain, co-president, C-SPAN; and Bob
Meyers, National Press Foundation. Tom Rosenstiel was a member of the committee
but did not vote.

he left the Nieman Foundation to run the Committee of Concerned Journalists, the
magazine Editor and Publisher put in
him on its cover, under the title, “The Conscience of Journalism.”
