Paul Anger of Detroit Free Press Receives Ben Bradlee Editor of the Year Award

Paul Anger, the Editor and Publisher of the Detroit Free Press, has been awarded the 2009 Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year Award by the National Press Foundation. The award carries a $5,000 honorarium and an engraved crystal vase. It will be presented at NPF’s 27th Annual Awards Dinner, Tuesday February 16, 2010, in Washington.

 

“The basic storyline is simple,” the judges said. Anger had “… the impossible task of saving a newspaper in the worst of circumstances. He went about it innovatively and aggressively. And while doing this, he oversaw his paper performing a great watchdog function of demanding accountability from government and leading investigations even amid great fight-back from the mayor.”  

At the dinner, Anger will address the theme of the evening, “Why Journalism Matters.” Also being honored at the awards dinner will be 60 Minutes, journalism leader Bill Kovach, Brianna Keilar of CNN and Julie Hirschfeld Davis of AP, cartoonist Mike Keefe of the Denver Post, among others.

 The judges for this year’s Bradlee award were George Condon (chair), Congress Daily; Jerry Seib, the Wall Street Journal; Chuck Lewis, Hearst Washington Bureau; John Walcott, McClatchy; and Steve Smith, DC Examiner.
